Extended Hours Services

It is well known that "standard" child care operating hours are not meeting the needs of the majority of shift workers who work early morning, evenings, overnight shifts, rotating and split shifts, casual/on-call jobs, and/or other irregular shifts.

Most licensed, regulated child care, especially daycare centres, seem to operate on a ‘standard’ work day basis - usually between 7:30 am to 6 pm.

Fact is, regulated child care options for parents who are in jobs or positions that require non-standard hours, are very limited in Canada.

• The “non-standard” work hour shift includes a wide variety of scenarios that are now quite common— from slightly extended hours (as early as 6:00 AM  or until 7:30 PM), to full overnights, or into the weekend.
• Fact is, there is an immediate need for non-standard hours child care in all regions of Canada, and also by parents in the Canadian Forces.
• Research shows that most shift workers work extended, or non standard hours because these types of positions offer better pay and benefits, or to accommodate family dynamics and child care needs.

What does everyone else do? I can’t be the only shift working mom out there with this problem!

It is as simple as this:

1. Most nurses are shift workers.
2. Nursing is still a female dominated profession.
3. Women have babies.
4. Women are frequently the ones to arrange child care and sacrifice their jobs if there are conflicts.

Why, as a shift working mom, do I have to have this child care conundrum? Why aren’t there more supports available to families like mine, so that women can stay in the profession that they chose before having kids?
